About the Sichuan Earthquake
We write this message with a heavy heart as we learn more about the destruction throughout Sichuan resulting from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit earlier this week. It is especially difficult as Sichuan is Zhuping’s home province. We appreciate the many calls and emails asking about the safety of our family and friends in China. Happily, Zhuping’s family was not hurt during the earthquake.
While our immediate family is safe, many in the region are completely devastated as the death toll rises and the survivors struggle with continued aftershock and now tremendous rainstorms. We know many of you would like to help the rescue and relief effort. The Red Cross Society of China mobilized immediately after the earthquake and can be supported by clicking here.
We recognize the relief efforts need to focus on providing basic needs, but beyond the immediate tragedy, the long-term damage to the livelihood of region is another piece of the hardship that has yet to manifest. Ya’an County (75 miles from the epicenter) is a large tea producing region that reports widespread damage that threatens to cripple its tea industry. For this reason, we are joining with the Ya’an Tea Business Association and others in the tea community to raise funds for the tea farmers in the area who are in great need. Seven Cups will donate 20% of all teahouse and online sales during the Memorial Day Weekend directly to those impacted by this natural disaster. If you would like to join us in this effort, you may stop by the teahouse and contribute directly.
