This tea was made by the Jing Gu tea factory, one of the four major government tea factories in Yunnan province during the 20th century. The Jing Gu Company set the standard for puer in China. Beginning in 1990, the Jing Gu tea masters started to be lured away by emerging private companies. This tea is the last Jing Gu Standard brick that was made by the company while it was still a government organization.
The Jing Gu area is famous for producing puer tea because of the wide variety of tea bushes growing there. The mao cha for this brick was primarily produced in the Jing Gu area, with additional mao cha from an unknown origin. It went through a special 60 day fermentation process to produce a dark, smooth tea. This black puer processing method was developed in the early 1970's as a quicker alternative to aging green puer, and the Jing Gu factory was one of the first places to use this process. Aged puer tea, whether it was made as green puer or black puer, has greater health benefits and a sweeter flavor. This rare, aged black puer brick is made from large leaves, and has a distinct date fragrance and a surprising sweetness, with a clear reddish color.
